About this image

Collapsed terrain seen in this image is called Hydapsis Chaos. Chaos is believed to form when a volitile rich surface material loses the volitiles (either by outgassing or melting) and collapses into the now empty porespace. Hydapsis Chaos is the source terrain for several outflow channels, supporting the melting of ice and release of water as the mode of formation.
