About this image

Martian impact crater interiors come in several different types and degree of fill. Today's crater has a central peak. This peak is caused by the rebound of melted materials formed by the impact event. As the impacting projectile increases in size the amount of melted materials increases as well, leading to central peak, central pit, and central peak with pit morphologies.
