About this image

These fractures occur within the volcanic plains south of Elysium Mons. The discontinuation of the fractures - like the one below the main group - indicates that these features are not formed by downdrop of material along faults, but rather formed by the collapse of the ceiling of lava tubes. Small regions of mega-ripples (a dune form) can be seen at the base of the hills at the bottom of the image.
