About this image

Today's VIS image shows a unique set of craters. This crater triplet was created by the impacts of a split meteor. It is not unusual for a meteor to break apart in the atmosphere. These 'chunks' will reach the surface almost simultaneously and very close together. There are two observations that confirm the split impactor crater creation - the 'walls' between the craters will be straight lines and the majority of the ejecta will be focused to the sides [parallel to the straight walls]. While dual impact craters are fairly rare, this triplet is extremely rare.
