South Polar Crater Dunes
About this image
Today's VIS image shows two large sand sheets on the floors of two craters in Terra Cimmeria. These craters are located near the south polar cap. The sand sheets appear different from ones at lower latitudes because ice is present within the sand. This interstitial ice 'freezes' the sand in place, allowing for only small movements of the topmost layers of sand during the warmer summer season.
