About this image

Today's VIS image shows part of Indus Vallis, located in northern Terra Sabaea. The channel system is over 300 km (186 miles) long. Additionally there are dark slope streaks on the sides of both the unnamed crater and the Indus Vallis channel. There are several suggested mechanisms to form these features. Two of the mechanisms are that the dusty surface has been altered to reveal darker rock beneath from motion of downward moving dust, or the surface is darkening by fluid or other surface staining.
