About this image

Today's VIS image shows part of Aganippe Fossa. This 537km (333mile) long linear depression is located just west of Arsia Mons. Two methods of formation have been suggested. The first method is tectonic forces, which would make this a large graben; the second method is collapse into a subsurface void of a lava tube.
